The BBC would eventually cancel the second series of The Adventure Games due to wanting to focus on experiences that better matched other games on the market. Granted, that did mean that each full series of The Adventure Games lacked the complete feeling of other narrative-driven video games. This may have helped Doctor Who fans relate the game. These playable episodes follow a similar storytelling pattern to the show itself, with each one being roughly the length of a normal episode.
By the end of the third episode, the Doctor and Amy decide to visit 23rd century London only to find the city underwater, under attack by a large shark-like creature and infected by the Vashta Nerada. The pair have a run-in with the Cybermen in the second episode, which leads them to seek a less life-threatening adventure in the third episode that ends with Amy having to pilot the Tardis to save herself and the suffocating Doctor. It starts with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond stopping the Daleks from altering the course of history.
The games ran for two "series," with a total of five episodes between them. However, the game was canceled after only one episode into its second series, as the BBC wanted to focus on larger experiences such as Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. The games were available to download on the BBC website and on Steam for a while before eventually being removed for licensing reasons, which puts The Adventure Games into a similar category as other canceled games.ĭoctor Who: The Adventure Games was released from 2010 to 2011, with the two series telling an interconnected story.
The Adventure Games saw fairly standard reviews as a video game, but was praised by Doctor Who fans for how accurately it recreated the feel of the show. Star Wars has dozens of memorable games and Star Trek has its own hidden gems, but Doctor Who really only has one memorable video game outing: Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. This was a series of episodic titles released on the BBC's website and Steam, but they are no longer available for download. Doctor Who remains one of the few classic sci-fi worlds that haven't quite exploded onto the medium of video games.
