The latter half of the twentieth century saw an explosion in the number of books in the genre, and it was accompanied by a proliferation of subgenres and styles. During this so-called Golden Age, writers examined and refined the genre’s conception, consciously setting the limits and creating a philosophy by which to define the genre. As the set’s Editor, Fiona Kelleghan, explains in her introduction, the mystery/detective genre saw a gelling of forms and conventions during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Since Edgar Allan Poe invented the modern mystery genre in the mid-nineteenth century, the number of authors writing in this field has steadily grown, as have the appetites of growing numbers of readers.
